Spider veins are permanently dilated capillaries. Because they are located close to the surface of the skin they tend to be highly visible. Spider veins most often occur on the legs, but they can also form on the face.
The most common cause is a hereditary predisposition. If other members of your family have spider veins, most likely you will develop them too. They are more likely to occur as an individual gets older. Damage to the skin from excessive sun exposure or conditions such as rosacea can also contribute to spider vein formation.
